MOGWAI: Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will

I held off saying much about the new MOGWAI. I liked certain tracks at first but didn’t fall in love with the whole thing right away. I think it works really well as an album, maybe not their best but probably better than most albums you’re going to hear this year.

Hardcore Will Never Die… is a bit of a grab-bag stylistically and it took a while to grow on me. You get some dancy electronic stuff, some loud aggressive stuff, and some of the slow & pretty stuff MOGWAI is best known for.  After several spins in the car & another round of playthroughs at home I’m digging it quite a bit. We already talked about tracks like Mexican Grand Prix & How to be a Werewolf. There are a few more standout tracks like Rano Pano, Death Rays, and Letters to the Metro, but the best by far is George Square Thatcher Death Party. It’s loud & pretty at the same time, everything this band does really well. The Deluxe version comes with a second disc containing a 23 minute song called Music for a Forgotten Future (the singing mountain). I could take it or leave it, it’s good but it’s nowhere near as epic as something like MY Father My King

Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will might not end up being your favorite album of all time, but it’s definitely got some good stuff on it.
