Someday I'll write about something new. Promise. In the meantime, Beck's re-issue of "One Foot In The Grave" is the latest in a string of re-issues this year that are making me broke. Thanks to Radiohead, Beastie Boys, and the fucking Beatles. I have no willpower when it comes to these things and you know it.
"Cause it's lonely here, in the ugly part of town. The buildings are all vacant, and the telephones are down."
If your only exposure to Beck is via "Loser" or "Where It's At" then give this one a spin and hear something completely different. These songs, a good majority of which are just vocals and the guitar, really show off what a damn good songwriter Beck has always been. I miss these albums where you kinda know what he's talking about and you kinda don't. "Asshole" was good enough for Tom Petty to cover so it's good enough for you.
Oh yeah, and the remastering job is good too. At least on the main album tracks. The bonus stuff is a little inconsistent as you'd expect but worth a listen for stuff like the original recording of "It's All In The Mind".
Thanks Mr. Hansen. Mellow Gold please next thanks. With "MTV Makes Me Want To Smoke Crack", cause I lost my single. Thanks.
